Level 4 Diploma in Canine Clinical Hydrotherapy

A regulated, industry-endorsed qualification in canine clinical hydrotherapy, taught in our working clinic at The Small Animal Clinic, Wymondham. A complete, standalone route into the profession — no prior qualification needed.

A structured next step for canine hydrotherapy professionals

This is a standalone qualification — you don’t need a Level 3 award or any existing background in canine hydrotherapy to start. It’s equally suited to complete beginners building a new career and to established professionals, including veterinary physiotherapists, wanting formal regulated recognition. Some experience with dogs is always helpful, but it isn’t a requirement.

You’ll cover the clinical knowledge and hands-on skills needed for safe, effective practice: risk assessment and first aid, functional anatomy and biomechanics, breed-specific conditions, water management, professional ethics, clinical reasoning, and advanced pool and aquatic treadmill technique.

Why train with us

You’ll learn in a genuine working clinic rather than a training-only facility — treating real referred patients, under supervision, in the same clinic we use for our day-to-day caseload at The Small Animal Clinic. That means your practical days are grounded in live clinical decision-making from the start, not simulated scenarios.

Our team spans canine chiropractic, veterinary physiotherapy, animal massage therapy and canine hydrotherapy, so you’re learning alongside a genuinely varied group of experts, not a single specialism. Teaching is delivered by tutors holding the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, so you’re taught by people qualified to teach as well as to practise.

The clinic itself is built for the job: a large hydrotherapy pool and treadmill for your practical training, plus a spacious log cabin used for teaching sessions and physiotherapy work.

Recognised across the industry

The qualification is regulated by Ofqual and has been developed to align with entry requirements for professional membership, so it counts for something beyond the certificate itself.

Successful candidates can go on to gain membership of IRVAP–ICH, and graduates can also use the course’s 70 practical education hours toward RAMP submissions that are short of practical hours.

Is this course for you?

  • New to canine hydrotherapy and looking for a complete route into the profession
  • Already working in canine healthcare — including veterinary physiotherapists — wanting formal, regulated recognition
  • Comfortable studying independently online, alongside 10 in-clinic practical days
  • Aged 18 or over

There’s no requirement to hold a Level 3 award or any prior qualification — this diploma stands on its own. Some experience with dogs is always helpful, but not essential. If you’re unsure whether it’s the right fit for you, get in touch and we’ll talk it through before you enrol.

How you’re assessed

Assessment is predominantly practical. Your clinical competence is confirmed through final practical assessments carried out in the clinic during your ten in-clinic days, observed directly by your tutor as you handle real patients.

Alongside this, you’ll build a supporting portfolio of evidence — case studies, skills logs, professional discussions and quizzes — that demonstrates your knowledge and understanding as you work through the theory units. Every unit is marked pass or fail, re-assessment is available where needed, and all assessment is conducted in English.

FAQs

Do I need any prior experience or qualifications?
No. This is a standalone qualification, so you don’t need a Level 3 award or any background in canine hydrotherapy to start. Some experience with dogs is always helpful, but it isn’t essential. It’s just as suited to complete beginners as it is to established professionals, such as veterinary physiotherapists, wanting formal recognition.
Can I fit this around a full-time job?
Yes. The theory element is entirely self-paced, typically taking 6–12 months to complete alongside work. You’ll only need to be in clinic for the 10 practical days, and we arrange the exact dates and timings directly with you.
How am I assessed?
Through a combination of portfolio evidence built up over your theory study, and final practical assessments carried out in the clinic during your in-clinic days. Every unit is marked pass or fail, and re-assessment is available if you need it.
What will I be able to do once qualified?
You’ll be eligible for membership of IRVAP–ICH and meet NARCH’s registration requirements, and the qualification is recognised by RAMP for practical-hours submissions — supporting your progression toward regulated professional practice.
Is the qualification nationally recognised?
Yes. It’s regulated by Ofqual (qualification number 610/4107/5), awarded through iPET Network, and endorsed by IRVAP–ICH and NARCH.
